đ„ Lights, camera, action! The #AFILatinFilm Festival is back September 18 â October 9. See you at the Special Presentation: CORINA on Friday, September 26, 7:00pmQ&A with filmmaker Urzula Barba Hopfner, plus post-screening reception sponsored by the Mexican Cultural Institute
After a devastating childhood incident, Corina (Naian GonzaÌlez Norvind, NEW ORDER) has carefully crafted her quiet life to fit in a few safe square blocks. Only occasionally leaving the confines of the Guadalajara apartment she shares with her similarly agoraphobic mother, Corina makes the occasional stop at the grocer on the way to her job at a nearby publishing house. When the acclaimed author of their popular book series ruins the long-awaited finale, Corina takes a stab at writing her own happy ending. When it ends up in her bossesâ hands, her entire existence is thrown off its axis. To save her job and conquer her fears, she will need the help of the friendly new grocer (Cristo FernaÌndez, TED LASSO) to reach the authorâs reclusive compound. Directed with idiosyncratic aplomb by first-time feature filmmaker Urzula Barba Hopfner, this playful charmer (think AMEÌLIE with a distinctly Mexican twist) won the Audience Award at this yearâs SXSW Film Festival. DIR/SCR/PROD Urzula Barba Hopfner; SCR Samuel Sosa; PROD Carlos HernaÌndez VaÌzquez, IvaÌn LoÌpez-Barba. Mexico, 2024, color, 96 min. In Spanish with English subtitles.
