2024 Small Telescope Workshop... again!!!
About this Event

This is the initial announcement for the 14th (I think!) annual Small Telescope Workshop, to be held on January 30-31, 2024 at the KBR (formerly Integrity Applications (IAI)) facility in Chantilly VA. As in previous years, the workshop will be held at the TS/SCI/NF level, with security sponsorship provided by AFRL and USNO.

Feel free to share this message with others in your organization.

The STW is a classified venue for discussion of the role of small (typically <~1 meter) telescopes for space situational awareness. Representative topics of interest include:

• Operation of small telescopes and/or telescope networks

• Foreign small telescope systems

• Non-traditional or advanced concepts to improve SSA collection

• Concepts or examples involving the combination of small and larger telescopes

• Ground, air, or space-based collection concepts and systems

• Advanced processing architectures, algorithms, etc.

• Policy issues related to the above topics

Papers that address these or related topics are welcomed. Anticipating a full agenda, preference will be given to classified papers vs papers that can be presented in open forums.

At this time, please take the following actions:

* Block the dates on your calendar;

* Register and send visit requests per the instructions below (please don’t wait until the last minute);

* Let me know if you would like to present a paper, and provide me an unclassified working title (as a placeholder at this time, just to help develop the agenda).

The key dates are as follows:

* September 11: attendee registration opens via web-based Eventbrite. You can use credit cards, print a receipt for reimbursement, etc. (Note-the ticket provided by Eventbrite is not needed for attendance). In addition to the Eventbrite registration, you must separately submit your visit request. Instructions are provided below. Please do not wait until the last minute.

* December 1: submission closes for authors to provide me intent to present (note I anticipate a robust submission of papers, so early submission is recommended). Procedure: send me an unclassified title and brief (1 paragraph) abstract. Be sure to include your name, affiliation, and phone number/email. Selected presenters will be notified on/about 8 December.

* January 5, 2024: Deadline for presenters to submit your briefing materials via classified email to Larry Gunn ([email protected])

* January 19- last date for cancellation and refund of registration fees. If cancellation/refund is requested prior to this date, follow refund instructions on the Eventbrite webpage.

* January 30-31: Small Telescope Workshop, Chantilly VA.

* February 9- anticipated posting of presentations on Intellipedia site.

The registration fee is $300 for all attendees. This fee offsets the expenses (fees, venue expenses, etc) and effort required to organize and operate the workshop.

Note to presenters:

1) If you anticipate a file size that will be too large to email (videos, etc), contact Larry Gunn ([email protected]) in advance to make alternate arrangements.

2) Hand carry of classified or unclassified presentations is NOT a viable option.

3) Submission of your presentation implies acceptance for us to post it on the intellipedia site that documents the proceedings. Please be sure security markings are correct, and there are no proprietary markings.

As a reminder, past presentations are posted on intelink at: https://intellipedia.intelink.ic.gov/wiki/SSA_Innovation:_Telescopes
