ABOUT PARK(ING) DAY
On PARK(ing) Day we transform parking spaces into vibrant hubs of activity, showcasing the diversity and energy of life in a city. For one day, this global movement transforms curbside parking spaces around the world into vibrant areas for diverse uses, advocating for safer, greener, and more equitable streets.
From parklets that feature interactive elements, educational displays, innovative designs, or a relaxing green space for gathering or unwinding in the shade, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Come explore, engage, and be inspired by the possibilities of urban design!
2024 PARK(ing) Day also coincides with the Toledo Arts Commission's Momentum Arts and Culture Festival in the same area! Don’t miss out on the fun—save the date!
WHY PARK(ING) DAY?
According to a 2018 parking study by ConnecToledo, Toledo’s downtown districts—including UpTown, Warehouse, Government, and Central Business Districts— show that only 51% of on-street parking and 44% of off-street parking were occupied during weekday afternoons. This raises the question: What are other ways that we can use these underused spaces?
Reflecting on Toledo’s vibrant past, before the decline of manufacturing and urban renewal, our downtown was alive with streetcars, department stores, theaters, and more. Can we reclaim and transform underused spaces to revive that dynamic atmosphere?
