The Livestock Marketing Association (LMA) Annual Convention is the premiere annual gathering of the livestock marketing industry with livestock auction market owners, dealers, auctioneers, and others who are involved in the livestock marketing industry coming together to network, share ideas and support the industry.
In conjunction with LMA’s convention, the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC) is going “Back to the Bricks” in 2024. This will mark the third time in its 60-year history the event has been hosted by the Oklahoma National Stockyards who also hosted in 1991 and 2010, the latter coinciding with their 100th anniversary celebration.
The WLAC will feature a total of 31 contestants, all livestock auctioneers, who earned their spot at one of three WLAC qualifying events held this fall as well as the reigning Calgary Stampede International Livestock Auctioneer Champion.
With competition composed of two parts—an interview and a live auction — the live sale portion held at the stockyards will feature contestants selling cattle to actual bidders in the seats. Judges will score each contestant on their presentation, chant, execution of sale and how likely they would be to hire the auctioneer.
Because the WLAC Champion is placed into such an important, high-profile role as spokesperson for the livestock marketing industry, they must establish their knowledge of the business and ability to express that knowledge during the interview round. The interview competition will be held as part of the LMA Annual Convention events and is key in selecting the new champion as the interview accounts for 25% of their overall score.
Reigning World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, Jacob Massey, will be there, along with many other past winners. Each will sell cattle during the Parade of Champions, a portion of the WLAC sale between the semi-finalist and finalist rounds.
