The Next Generation Jazz Band of New Orleans
The Next Generation Jazz Band of New Orleans is a New Orleans based community big band designed to give young student musicians an opportunity to learn to play jazz in a big band setting. Jeremy Williams (Director) formed the Next Generation Jazz Band from local student musicians from middle school through college age. The band performs a wide variety of music from big band classics like Basie and Ellington to traditional New Orleans standards. With many of the band members living in the New Orleans and local surrounding areas we believe it is important to protect and perpetuate our local New Orleans music to the Next Generation of young musicians. With the band members having a direct connection to the city the band puts a strong emphasis on traditional New Orleans Jazz.
The band's founders (Jeremy and Michelle Williams) said that New Orleans music has a very distinctive sound and feel to it. Jeremy and Michelle started this jazz band to give young musicians an opportunity to learn the music of our own city. Jazz is an American treasure. The origins of Jazz can be traced back to Congo Square in New Orleans in its earliest days of trade in a port city. This music created in America is a national treasure. Jazz is New Orleans’ gift to the world and it should be protected for generations to come.
The big band music of the many greats that have come before us such as (Basie, Ellington and so many others) are all part of the ever evolving language that we call jazz. As the director Williams says, what we do is so much more than just playing notes on a page. The black and white notes on a page are just ink and paper. As a modern big band in the twenty-first century we are standing on the shoulders of giants that came before us. It is our job to honor and pay homage to the many greats that paved the way for us today. As musicians it is also our job to push the music forward for the Next Generation of young musicians coming up. Williams says we work to build a community of better people and musicians through music. The skills the band members are learning while playing in the band are vital life skills they will take with them for the rest of their life. Skills such as team work, discipline, multitasking, time management, and the importance of working together for a common goal. New Orleans is known the world over for its music and culture. The feeling New Orleans music brings to people is very distinctive. When the music forms a sense of community and culture this is only possible because of the hard work the young musicians put in to perpetuate the music onto the Next Generation of young musicians.
