Hospice & Community Care has dedicated over 40 years to providing hospice care for children and teens with serious illnesses. Collaborating closely with doctors and hospitals, they established the Sunflower Pediatric Program to cater to the unique needs of these patients and their families. The program serves children with complex, chronic health conditions, often enduring their illness for years, requiring a cohesive network of clinical professionals and caregivers. In 2020, they expanded the pediatric services to offer in-home palliative care, staffed by a multidisciplinary team, ensuring seamless coordination with the child’s medical specialist. The Sunflower Pediatric Program offers vital support for anticipatory grief, assists with complex decision-making regarding the child’s care, and remains available 24/7 for consultation.
The Penn State Health Children’s Hospital Facility Dog Program commenced in 2016 under the Child Life Program with Kaia as the first dog. Subsequently, Pilot, Captain, Skye, Thor and Baron joined Kaia at the Children’s Hospital. These facility dogs are integral members, paired with child life professionals or recreation therapists to engage in targeted interventions. From assisting with post-surgery ambulation to providing comfort during end-of-life moments, these dogs play diverse roles in the hospital environment, enhancing the well-being of patients and families.
Your generosity ensures that children and families in our community receive personalized care and comfort, enriching their quality of life.
Together, let's build a legacy of compassion and change. Join us in making a difference that will resonate for generations.
