Applied Geotechnics: Is it going beyond traditional geotechnical engineering?

Traditional geotechnical engineering primarily deals with the design and construction of foundations for various upper structures (e.g., buildings, bridges, dams, etc.), earthen embankment, retaining structures, underground structures, as well as stabilization of slope, ground soil improvement etc. Owing to the economic development and potential impact of climate change, some engineering projects require that geotechnical engineers go beyond these traditional jobs. For example, tunneling under a highspeed railway requires accurate ground settlement control (at mm level), high-speed train tends to cause high-frequency ground vibration (up to 100 Hz) and additional settlement, engineering developments in permafrost region requires special consideration for geotechnical infrastructure design, large-scale deep excavation may need information-empowered retaining structure design, geo-environmental engineering projects requires reasonable consideration of thermo-chemo-mechanical coupling. This talk will give some examples to show the challenges and new opportunities for our geotechnical community.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Peijun Guo is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at McMaster University. He received his BSc in Railway Engineering (1984) and MASc. in Geotechnical Engineering (1987) from Southwest Jiaotong University, China, and PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Calgary (2000), Canada. Before joining McMaster University in 2002, he worked at C-CORE at St. John’s Newfoundland from 2000 to 2002.

Dr. Guo has extensive experience in experimental study of soil behaviour, numerical modelling of complex geotechnical structures, and the development of stress-strain models for geological materials. Ha has published more than 100 publications in international refereed journals (SCI). More recently, his research interests have been extended to multi-scale and multi-physics coupled problems in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering to account for the impact of environmental factors related to climate change. His research on applied geotechnology includes analysis of soil-structure interaction under complex conditions, numerical modelling of deep reservoir operation and hydraulic fracturing, green pavement technology as well as approaches to mitigate impact of climate change on geotechnical infrastructures. He has received research funds from various grant agencies and industry.

The CGS-SOS women committee will hold an in-person meeting. This is an initiative to enhance female contribution and a network to share experiences, create relevant content, support each other and engage your talent. A networking workshop will be held at this event:

Engineering plays a crucial role in society. As engineers we solve real world problems to shape our future and for that, we need the best talent. Women has historically been underrepresented in engineering. In her presentation, Emma will share her experiences in engineering as a woman and share lessons learned about inclusion to work toward gender balance.

Emma Hamilton is a registered professional engineer with 19 years of experience. She grew up in Montreal and obtained her Bachelor (Civil) and Master (Civil/Environmental) of Engineering from McGill University. Her professional experience includes environmental engineering consulting work in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. She joined Metrolinx in 2016 and worked in rail facilities maintenance before moving to her current role as Senior Advisor to the Chief Engineer.
