Watkinsville, GA Forty-eight of the top potters from across Georgia will display their work during Pottery Perspectives 2023, a huge exhibition and sale on view in the Oconee Cultural Art Foundation’s (OCAF) 1902 building from August 25 through September 10, 2023. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Pottery Perspectives 2023 is the 21st annual event that has lured collectors, art patrons and hundreds of others who simply love beautiful functional pottery.
Upwards of 4,000 pieces of pottery created by some of the most gifted ceramic artists in Georgia will be for sale.
On view in the Hall Gallery will be selections by Sandy Culp. Sandy Culp is a naturalist sculptor who loves to show the relationship between women and nature, sometimes surrealistically. Her forte is trompe l’oeil. She states, “I find it exhilarating to create a sculpture that not only “fools the eye” but may be surprisingly functional. I am not a production artist and pride myself on my love for and ‘attention to detail’ that transforms into intentionally stylized and/or extreme realism depending on my desired effect.”
Each piece, after endless research, is meticulously hand done using sculpting and carving techniques to be truly unique and individual even within a common theme of Culp’s repertoire.
On Saturday, August 26 and Sunday, August 27, well-known potter Martha Cook will provide a workshop entitled “Inspirations: Texture, Form, and Function--Explorations in Wheel, Hand building, and Surface Decoration.” In the workshop, Martha will demonstrate mugs, bowls, vases, pitchers and more using both wheel and hand-building techniques. She will share her inspirations and ideas while demonstrating a variety of surface decorations, such as slip applications, stamps, mishima, kohiki, and texture.
Martha Cook is a ceramic artist known for her ability to integrate texture, form, and function. Using both wheel and hand-building techniques, she finds joy working with clay in ways that reveal its true nature. Martha taught ceramics and sculpture in public schools for 30 years. She is currently the Assistant to the Pottery Director and an Instructor at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
The workshop is $200 for OCAF members, and $225 for non-members.
OCAF will host a Preview Night for the event on Friday, August 25, from 5 until 8 p.m. The cost is $20 per person at the door. During this event, shoppers will have the first opportunity to make their purchases before the sale is open to the public.
The 2023 Perspectives Committee members are Cyndee Perdue Moore (chair); Katie Hein, Patricia Jordan, Sarajane Love, Jim Norton, and Jamie Stewart.
