On behalf of the Board and the Organising Committee we would like to welcome all delegates to Adelaide for the 2023 ANZCCART Conference.
About this Event

Program highlights include advances in the 3Rs, animal welfare assessment, training, ethical review, compliance initiatives and openness, and both laboratory animal and wildlife topics will be covered.

Presentations will be designed for members of all Animal Ethics Committee categories as well as any others with an interest in the ethics and welfare of animals used in research or teaching including scientists and members of the broader community.

The conference aims to foster informed discussion and debate with respect for differing views. The popular breakout sessions will facilitate small group discussions, and there will be plenty of opportunities for networking and exchange of ideas.

The PIRL facility is the only purpose-built large and small animal NATA-accredited Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) research facility in Australia where surgical theatres and imaging equipment sit side-by-side with quality indoor and outdoor animal holding facilities. The facility covers 23 acres and is located at Gilles Plains, 13 km northeast of the Adelaide CBD.

The tour will include a tour of the facility where you will be able see the surgery suites, imaging equipment and most animal holding areas. A Q & A session will also be included. Please note that covered footwear is required to enter this facility.

Numbers are limited to 15 people per visit. Depending on demand, additional tours may be arranged for Wednesday and Thursday from 3.00pm.

Bus transport cost is $20.00. The bus will leave from and return to the Hotel. Please book and pay through Eventbrite.

Workshops

1. Competency Training and Assessment for Animal Users – how do we assure competence is achieved?

Thursday 10th August from 3.15 - 5.00pm. Facilitator: Gail Anderson.

Hotel Grand Chancellor, Room TBA

The Code and the New Zealand Act say that Animal Ethic Committees (AECs) must assure that animal users are competent to do the procedures for which they have been given AEC permission. How can we best do this?

The workshop will outline a step-wise process for trainers and AECs to walk their trainees from novice to competence. The process of training and assessment using Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) will be outlined such that any procedure can be broken into its component parts to allow the development of training templates. The training templates and those for DOPS assessments already available in ComPass will be highlighted as starting points to allow further Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) based training. The concept of a Skills Lab will be introduced.

The Workshop is free. Please book your place through Eventbrite.

2. Making Training Models and Setting up a Skills Lab to facilitate Competence Training.

Friday 11 August from 9.30 - 12noon. Facilitator: Gail Anderson

This workshop will involve a look at the Skills Lab that was set up in the old sheep surgery at The University of Adelaide and uses very low-cost models for training. We will then go to an open teaching lab to go through how to make some of these models for basic skills training - the lab will be focused on laboratory animal training and aseptic technique skills trainers. Recipes for how to make the models will be given.

Helen Mayo South Building, University of Adelaide, Frome Rd, Adelaide. To get there, take the free tram along North Terrace going east and get off at the last tram and walk north down Frome Rd towards the Zoo.
