£12/£6 Join us for this wonderful event which gives remarkable insight into what makes a great script for a short film.
The first part of the evening is a conversation with our award-winning judges, about their careers. This year we are thrilled to welcome:
Philippa Lowthorpe is a three times Bafta winning TV and Film Director. She became the first woman to win a Bafta for Best Director at the Bafta Television Awards in 2013. She was awarded her second directing BAFTA in 2018 for Three Girls, the highly acclaimed and multi award-winning TV Series.
She was lead director of the first series of Call The Midwife, which had the highest viewing figures of any BBC show for the previous 10 years. Philippa is also known for The Third Day (2020), Misbehaviour (2020), The Crown (2017), and Three Girls ( 2017).
Kate Byers won the Bafta for best producer in 2020 for the breakthrough hit, Bait. She evolved into producing from a successful acting career collaborating with Mike Leigh, Roger Michell, Mike Alfreds, & Peter Kosminsky. Training in script development in 2005, she worked with South West Screen Digital Shorts, & BBC Dennis Potter Award.
Her early work with Esther May Campbell on award winning Charlie Harry’s Wondrous Nothing established Kate within the South West film making community, working on award-winning short films.
Col Needham is the founder and CEO of IMDb, the world’s most popular and authoritative source for information on movies, TV shows, and celebrities.
IMDb grew out of a personal database of movie information that Col created as a teenager, combined with similar data collected on the internet in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
As The Independent wrote, "you would barely guess that the bespectacled chap in front of you is one of the most successful men in the history of internet start-ups – as well as in the film industry".
We will then watch a rehearsed table by actors from Bath Spa University read of the five shortlisted scripts - and then the judges will reveal who will win £5,000 cash, £1,000-worth of hire kit from Visual Impact AND an enamel IMDb badge (usually only given to IMDb employees).
Our finalists are:
Old Friends by Sian Walker
Cake by Frances Eva Lea
Clifftop by Billy Morton
While Time Is Away by Miriam Jarvis
One Last Time by Jonathan Skinner
