About this Event
The 2022 Hawaii Search and Rescue Conference and Wilderness Safety Event (Hawai’i SAR CON), with Special Guest Survivorman, Les Stroud will host broad range of activities and trainings for both professional rescuers and community members.
Training will cover subject areas such as man tracking, sUAS use in SAR, dynamics of helicopter operations in SAR, basic and advanced rope work, lost person behavior, search management, K9 trailing and training for SAR, GIS software in search planning, drone mission planning and execution, patient packaging and transport and more. Lectures and speakers will include topics such as resource management & mission planning, community lead search operations, lost person behavior, and problem prevention planning.
Conference Focus
Hawaii’s first event of this kind will focus on Wilderness Safety and will focus on community enriching experiences and enhancing the skills for Search and Rescue teams and volunteers.
Exploring the benefits of the latest technologies available, with specific applicability to the unique challenges to rescuing lost persons in the Hawaiian wilderness areas. This conference is designed to provide an understanding of the latest technologies and techniques used in the SAR world by showcasing various brands involved in wilderness survival accessories.

Location and Logistics
Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii
Kaneohe Bay, a 7,500-acre inlet, is the largest sheltered body of water in the main Hawaiian Islands, and the only bay in Hawaii with a barrier reef. Five tiny islands are anchored in the bay. The two largest are Chinaman’s Hat and Coconut Island. Coconut Island is owned by the State of Hawaii and is home to a University of Hawaii research center. But it is perhaps better known for its role in the long-standing television series, “Gilligan’s Island.”
The conference will be held at Kualoa Ranch. Kualoa Ranch is home to Jurassic Park and is one of the largest attractions in the State. This ~4,000-acre billion-dollar private nature reserve located on the windward coast of O’ahu is also a working cattle ranch and farm, comprising three valleys-Hakipuu, Kualoa, and Ka’a’awa, all of which is home to the Kualoa grown agricultural efforts. This diversified agricultural operation is one of the most diverse farming operations in the state with 100% of the harvest consumed locally, helping to support a healthy food system and island community.

TRANSPORTATION
You can use the public bus as an option. The route would be HNL (Honolulu Airport) to Kaneohe and takes approximately an hour to two hours. You will need to take Line 20, Line 60. Please double check the route as at times bus lines and times change. You will need to read all information about the size of your bags prior to riding the bus.
TICKETS
There are full conference tickets and one day tickets available for purchase. Your purchased ticket gives you entry to the conference and access to the exhibitors/vendors.
If you are younger than 18, you will need to sign a parental consent which is linked here.

What to Bring
Some classroom work may require a computer. Cell phones will be required to download apps which will be used in class. Dress comfortably and bring what you would for a hike or a search.

Speakers and Instructors

Survivorman, Les Stroud
Les is an Instructor and Special Resource volunteer with Jackson Country SAR (JCSAR) in Southern Oregon. Les was part of a small JCSAR team of 5 who found 70 yr. old, missing Oregon fisherman, after 17 days lost in extremely remote forest.
Having a unique knowledge of the wilderness survival mindset: Stroud, is the host and producer of the popular, Survivorman series seen on The Science Channel, Discovery, and Nat Geo. Survivorman is the catalyst which led to the multibillion-dollar wilderness survival TV industry.
With more than 76 Producer credits, and over 100 film credits, Les is an anomaly who is also an author, recording artist/musician who performs around the country, has a Podcast, Surviving Life with Les Stroud and is currently hosting Les Stroud's Wild Harvest on PBS which explores foraging wild foods in season from local sources.
Shay Cook
Shay Cook has been training with K9 SAR since 1995 in Trailing, Cadaver, Wilderness Area and more recently Disaster with FEMA. She is a member of California Rescue Dog Association (CARDA), Alameda County Sheriff Search and Rescue (ALCO), Marin County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (MSAR), Yosemite Search and Rescue Dog Team (YODOGS) and FEMA Oakland Task Force 4 (TF4). Shay has been training dogs since 1986 and has worked with dogs in Schutzhund, guide dogs for the blind, obedience, socialization, tracking, herding and scent detection. Shay's professional job is as an Assistant Director at UC Davis and currently working on exploring “Scent Navigation” with other researchers.
She has presented at SAREX, SAR City and other events throughout the state and appreciates sharing what I have learned and getting feedback/perspective from others.
Dr. Katelynn Perrault
Dr. Katelynn Perrault is an Associate Professor of Forensic Sciences and Chemistry at Chaminade University of Honolulu in Hawaii. Kate is the Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Forensic and Bioanalytical Chemistry, which is supported through several federal grants, foundation grants, and industry support. She has a synergistic teaching, research, and outreach program, mentoring numerous undergraduate students and volunteering at community events to promote awareness of chemistry and the forensic sciences to both adults and children.
Her research group uses chemistry to understand the decomposition of human and animal remains in outdoor environments and focuses predominantly on the odor produced during decomposition. She has collaborated with several police agencies, outdoor research facilities, search and recovery groups, and volunteer organizations worldwide.
Greg Pratt
Gregory Pratt spent 22 years as a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) before retiring in December 2019. Upon completion of the FBI Academy, Greg reported to the San Antonio Division of the FBI, where he spent his entire career. Early in his career, Greg worked on squads investigating White Collar Crime, Government Fraud, and Public Corruption. He also served as the Training Agent and Active Shooter Coordinator for the San Antonio Division of the FBI. Greg spent the last several years of his career assigned to the Domestic Terrorism Squad on the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). In this capacity, Greg and his squad mates investigated threats to carry out acts of violence on schools, businesses, and places of worship.
Greg had several collateral duties while serving in the FBI, to include Crisis/Hostage Negotiator, Airport Liaison Agent, Campus Liaison Agent, Surveillance Pilot, and Crisis Management Coordinator. In addition, Greg served as a Team Leader for the Evidence Response Team (ERT). While serving on ERT, Greg and his team processed the crime scenes of the Active Shooter Events at Fort Hood and Sutherland Springs Baptist Church. Prior to working for the FBI, Greg was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was later commissioned in the United States Navy, where he served as a Naval Flight Officer for six years.

REGISTRATION
Participants who purchase the full conference ticket must check in with the STAT team on MAY 20, 2022 (FRIDAY). Location will be determined.
If you purchase a one-day ticket for Friday, Saturday or Sunday, please check in with us on the day of training.

COVID-19 POLICY
All attendees will be required to follow published Hawaii State Laws, Kualoa Ranch polices, and Hawaii SAR CON Covid-19 policy, that are in effect at the time of the Conference. Failure to do so will result in being removed from the Conference with no refund.

Event Restrictions and Cancellation
By purchasing a ticket and attending the Conference, you accept all Conference regulations and restrictions, including:

The organizer reserves the right to cancel the event wholly or in part in case of an insufficient number of participants, program cancellations, organizational reasons, changes of availability of speakers, force majeure or other unforeseeable events that render the execution of the event impossible and/or not worthwhile or that would lead to the organizer incurring unreasonable expenses in executing the event. The organizer shall immediately inform participants of such changes
Should an event be cancelled by the organizer for organizational reasons or as a result of force majeure, as outlined above, the organizer will refund the event fee in full. Claims for further liabilities or damages are excluded. Participants may not assert any further claims and any such claims shall be excluded.
Subject to Change Without Notice
The organizer reserves the right to make changes to the event program. If necessary, changes may be made to its content, method and organization before or during the event, without notice insofar as these changes do not substantially diminish the described benefits of the event for the participant.
