Registration for the 2022 Grayton Beach Kous Kouri 8 & 4-miler, presented by Beau Interiors, is OPEN!
This will be year #6 of this fantastic race - we're thinking this will be the best year yet! The Kous Kouri will be taking place on Saturday, November 26th starting at 8:00a. Beginning with the 2022 race, we will utilize a staggered start. More on that below.
Course: The Kous Kouri will start and finish at the Grayton Beach State Park trailhead (gravel parking lot on CR- 30A), with both the 8 and 4-mile courses taking place exclusively on their fantastic (and fantastically beautiful) trail system!
Course maps can be found at https://www.runrotorhead30a.com/grayton-beach-kous-kouri
Staggered Start. Again, the race will be starting at the trailhead parking lot. To ensure an orderly and safe start to the race + to eliminate congestion on the trails, we’ll be utilizing a staggered start. In short, 25 runners will be assigned a specific 10-minute block of time. Runners are free to start at any point during their assigned 10-minute block. For example, if assigned the 8:10-8:20a block, you may start at 8:10a. Or 8:14a. Or 8:19a. The Jackalopes…those who anticipate sustaining a pace of 7:30 p/mile or faster, will be encouraged to start at 8:00a in the first wave of runners. After the Jackalopes, we’ll have several waves of 8-mile runners and then finally the 4-mile runners. We utilized this format at the Nov 2020 race and it worked beautifully. In fact, some folks wanted us to keep it. Well, if you were one of those people you're now getting your wish! :) NOTE: There's (very) limited parking at the trailhead parking lot, so runners are highly encouraged to park at AJ's Grayton Beach. We've booked two Tuk Tuks from Tuk Tuk 30A - they'll transport runners the .83 miles from AJ's to the start line. Or feel free to walk and use the trek to the start line as a warm-up.
Terrain: While on the trails you can expect tree roots, rocks, sand, fallen over trees, and potentially, if there's rain, standing water and mud. In other words, pure awesomeness!!! Again, I just wanted to discuss the terrain so no one shows up on race day expecting a groomed running path with no trip hazards and with aspirations of going home with clean shoes. Simply put, not gonna happen!
Awards/Post-Race Social: After finishing your race, hop in a Tuk Tuk or walk back to AJ's for the awards + post-race social. Speaking of awards...there will be awards for the the men’s and women’s winners and runner ups for both the 8-mile and 4-mile courses. As always with the Kous Kouri, age group awards are also provided to the first place through third place finishers from each age group. All registered runners who cross the finish line for their respective race will receive a suitably cool finisher’s award.
As far as particulars with regards to the post-race social, all registered runners with a bib will receive TWO beers + vittles to be determined. Your bib will have three tabs across the bottom: these tabs are what will get you the beer(s) + vittles, so be sure to hang on to your bib!!! NOTE: if you do wish to partake in the beers, you must have a valid ID on you to get served! If beer is not your thing, they will also have a full selection of non-alcoholic beverages, i.e. soft drinks, tea, coffee, etc. For friends and family on-hand, they will also have their full menu available. We're also going to have live entertainment at the social.
Packet Pick-up: Early packet pick-up will be at AJ's on Friday, November 25th from 3-7p. If you can't make it on Friday, no worries, there will also be packet pick-up on race morning adjcent the start line at AJ's starting at 7:00a. Anyway, I've been told that there will be several specials at AJ's on Friday; so after your Black Friday shopping, you should come get your packet and take advantage!
Awesome race swag as always! This year all registered runners will receive the official Grayton Beach Kous Kouri long-sleeve race shirt.
***ATTENTION WALKERS: Walkers, particularly those doing the 8-miler, will have the opportunity to start at 7:30a.
Promo Codes: We love and appreciate our military and first responders.
ACTIVE DUTY military, police, sheriff's deputies, fire, and paramedics, please use the HERO1 promo code to receive 10% off your registration.
If you want to run, but the registration fee will truly set you back due to current financial hardship, please give us a holler at [email protected]. We set three registrations aside each race for folks in such a predicament.
Schedule for race morning...
7:00-8:00a: Race day registration and packet pick-up
7:40a: Runners begin getting transported to the start line
8:00a: Grayton Beach Kous Kouri start
10:00a: Awards ceremony + Post-race festivities
As always, 10% of the gross proceeds from the registration fees will be going to an organization called Streethearts, a rescue program for children living on the street in Cap-Haitian, Haiti. Streethearts is dedicated to ending the population of homeless children in Haiti. To learn more, please visit www.streetheartshaiti.org. Considering Streethearts started as a running club I'd say it's only fitting that we're running to support them! And just FYI: "Kous Kouri," the name of the race, loosely translates to "trail running" in Haitian Creole.
From start to finish this should be a great event, at a great time of year, and in support of an OUTSTANDING cause. We certainly hope you can make it out!
