An introduction to the context and opportunities of welding in the nuclear industry for the welding and fabrication sector.
About this Event

As the transition toward carbon-neutral energy sources continues to gain momentum both around the world and in Alberta, new opportunities emerge for industries in Alberta and beyond to capitalize on the experience and skills developed in the oil and gas industry. With the introduction of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) onto the world stage, the market is primed for entry by fabricators with experience in demanding applications such as pressure vessels and pipeline welding.

As such, the CCWJ and its CWB student chapter are excited to present a full-day seminar on the nuclear industry and its potential for the welding and fabrication sector in Alberta and beyond.

This seminar comes at just the right time: An MOU was signed on April 14, 2021 between Ontario, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Alberta with the goal "to collaborate on the advancement of SMRs as a clean energy option to address climate change and regional energy demands, while supporting economic growth and innovation." On March 28, 2022, the Government of Alberta released a “new strategic plan for the deployment of small modular reactors”, which strengthens the commitment to this emerging sector. PrairiesCan (formerly Western Economic Diversification, WD) is also actively exploring this direction, and the SMR Roadmap indicates that now is the ideal time to explore opportunities in this market.

Preliminary program:

Prof. Jason Donev (University of Calgary): An introduction on the context and fundamentals of the nuclear industry

Lunch and tours of the Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining (CCWJ) at the University of Alberta

Teresa Melfi (Technical Fellow, Lincoln Electric)

Rob Pistor (Managing Director, Liburdi): Mechanized Welding Required for Nuclear Construction and Maintenance

The seminar will be in-person and hosted at the University of Alberta in the 8th-floor of the Donadeo Innovation Centre for Engineering. We will also provide an online attendance option via Zoom, and tickets for online and in-person attendance are the same.
