Princeton Club of Japan presents our inaugural Princeton Alumni Association Speakers Bureau where an invited professor presents their Princeton University scholarly pursuits. This event will be the club's key celebration of 200 years of the alumni association branded events.
Vivian is a material chemist. She has also been a featured speaker on Princeton Journey’s Programs and is consistently a favorite with alumni audiences. She serves as Assistant Director of STEM Education in Princeton’s Center on Science and Technology, and her spring course, Beyond Transparency: Glass as Material and Muse, explores glass from both the molecular and artistic perspectives.
Her work at Princeton focuses on interdisciplinary STEM education, with an emphasis on integrating materials science, art, and history, especially through the study of glass. For this talk, tentatively titled "Beyond Transparency: Glass as Material and Muse" (borrowed from her course title), she hopes to offer a glimpse at how glass provides an excellent material theme across disciplines. Drawing on examples of glass art, including works from our newly opened Princeton University Art Museum, she will highlight how these objects can open up discussions of both historical practices and the underlying science, particularly the origins of color and the fascinating optical phenomena. She will also show a few student works from her recent classes to share some exciting outcomes from these hands-on, inquiry-driven approaches that promote both scientific curiosity and artistic insight.
