The Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (ICST) is celebrating its 20th anniversary – with a symposium, concerts at the Toni-Areal and Kunstraum Walcheturm, an exhibition of the institute’s research projects, and a record release on the Domizil label.
As part of this half-day symposium, we will engage in discussions with colleagues from Swiss universities about the relationship between research and teaching in the field of electronic music, and how these have evolved over time.
Our institute, its teaching, and the artistic profiles of researchers and students have undergone significant changes. When the ICST was founded, electronic music at conservatoires was largely the domain of specialists. Today, electronics are firmly embedded in many sound-based artistic practices. This development has brought with it a greater diversity and coexistence of aesthetic orientations; artists now often work across multiple aesthetics while also engaging in research.
Study programmes and the focus of research institutes must respond to these shifts. With this symposium, we aim to initiate a shared discussion on these issues.
