This 2-day trad (traditional) climbing course teaches you how to place gear, build anchors, and climb safely using natural rock features and protection. It’s perfect for outdoor climbers wanting to gain confidence with nuts, cams, and natural anchors — or those aiming for mountaineering or NZOIA Rock 1 or Rock 2 certification.
✅ What You’ll Learn:
✔️ Trad gear placements: nuts, cams, hexes
✔️ Natural protection: trees, threads, horns, boulders
✔️ Building solid trad anchors (Y & W shape, slings, cordelettes)
✔️ Climbing safety systems, buddy checks & gear inspection
✔️ Trad belaying techniques and stance management
✔️ Reading NZ rock grades and guidebooks
✔️ Route access and assessing safety from the top
🧗 Course Format:
- 2 full days of expert-led training
- Climbing at Christchurch’s best trad areas: Rapaki & Gibraltar Rock
- Gear provided (bring your own if preferred)
- Maximum 4:1 client-to-instructor ratio for safe, quality learning

- Personal outdoor gear (boots, jacket, daypack, etc.)
- Food for both days – this course is self-catered
- A notebook if you want to keep track of gear systems!
🛏️ Accommodation:
Accommodation is NOT included. We recommend staying in Central or South Christchurch. Avoid accommodation north or east of the city.
