With this two-day training, attendees will leave this two-day training, participants will leave equipped with the following:
- A clear understanding of current and medically accurate terminology related to working with trans and gender non-conforming clients
- A clear understanding of a variety of different gender identities, expressions, and how to avoid microaggressions that could be harmful to clients
- A clear understanding of Gender Dysphoria as well as common comorbities we see when working with the trans population
- A clear understanding of important and ethical considerations when working with trans and GNC minors
- A clear understanding of how intersectionality plays a key role in a client’s understanding of themselves, level of resilience, and access to appropriate trans-affirming care
- A clear understanding of our country and state’s historical and current positions on trans individuals politically, socially, and medically, as well as future legislative concerns that will impact our clients
- A clear understanding of evidence-based practices when caring for trans clients, including understanding which theoretical frameworks may reinforce heteronormativity and invalidate the experiences of trans clients
- A clear understanding of common medical transition procedures from guest trans-specializing medical providers
- A clear understanding and competency to provide gender-affirming assessments and letters requested by clients seeking affirming medical care

FRIDAY TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:
-Understanding current identifying terminology including pronouns when working with trans clients
-Ethics overview and unique treatment considerations and practical therapy exercises, including considerations when working with minors
-An understanding of microaggressions and how to affirm without causing unintentional harm
-The history of the gender dysphoria as a DSM diagnosis and our present understanding of it, including common comorbidities when working with trans clients
-An overview of helpful resources for clients including books, treatment workbooks, as well as local trans-affirming social services, medical clinics, legal services, and assistance in navigating public services such as legal name changes, updating drivers licenses and other legal documents including social security cards and birth certificates, etc.
SATURDAY TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:
-Sociopoiltical factors that contribute to minority stress
-How to support clients when experiencing trans negativity in the workplace
-Guest political speaker providing past and present legislation that impacts our trans clients in Kansas as well as throughout the nation
-How minority stress negatively impacts trans individuals in things such as employment, housing, health care, law enforcement contact, and access to mental health services
-Guest speakers from University of Kansas Health Systems Gender Diversity Clinic providing up to date information on trans-affirming medical procedures and how to work well together as a multidisciplinary team
-Trans-affirming letter requirements and clear training for assessment and letters for HRT as well as any gender confirmation surgeries
-Providing a free letter writing clinic to community members in need
This training will be led by LP Curtis-Baker, LSCSW (they/she) and Ari Hawk (they/them) from Curtis-Baker Therapeutic Services. (See www.cbtherapeuticservices.com/our-team for bios). Additional speakers include University of Kansas Health Systems Gender Clinic staff and experts on current and upcoming legislation effecting care for trans and GNC clients.
Curtis-Baker Therapeutic Services is a group practice based out of Junction City, KS that specializes in providing mental health care to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Lunch will be provided both days, as well as an optional Friday night networking mixer at GROW Plant Bar and Lounge.
At the end of day 2, a free gender-affirming letter workshop will be provided for anyone in the community.
BSRB approved training for 11 CEUs , Certificate provided upon training and post-test completion.
