Connor was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy when he was only nine months old. Duchenne is a severe genetic disease that leads to progressive loss of muscle and results in deterioration of the skeletal, heart, and lung muscles. This often leads to loss of ambulation at a young age and a shortened life expectancy. The damage caused by this disease is irreversible and every day as most kids wake up bigger and stronger, children with Duchenne wake up weaker and desperately needing something to slow or stop the progression of their disease. Hence the T-shirt quote “Today is my strongest day”.
Out of the thousands of various deletion/mutation combinations, Connor is missing his 45th exon in the Dystrophin gene, which is why you’ll see various 45 references throughout the race. Every child with Duchenne is unique in their own way, but they all share one thing in common – a need for better treatment and one day a cure, but today starts with Hope.
Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) has invested over $55 Million dollars into Duchenne research and in the last two years have contributed to the approval of 8 FDA drug approvals, with many more in development. Contributions to PPMD have a direct impact on the progression of these treatments and bettering the livelihoods for children with Duchenne.
