1Hood Select: Mental Health First Aid Certification
About this Event
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training certification provided by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults. You’ll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to those who are struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support.
AFTER THE COURSE, YOU’LL BE ABLE TO:
- Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
- Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
- Understand how to interact with a person in crisis.
- Know how to connect a person with help.
- Use self-care tools and techniques.
The course will be taught over a period of six hours with a break for lunch as well as a few shorter breaks.
Prior to the training you will receive login information for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing MHFA website where you will take part in a two hours of online pre-work at a time that is convenient for you. You need to have this pre-work completed prior to attending the training.After completing the training and the brief online knowledge check you will be awarded Mental Health First Aid Certification which is good for two years.
The course will be taught by Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor and 1Hood Media Director of Development Kathleen McGuire Gaines. Since 2021, Katie has trained and certified 100 mental health first aiders.
