About this Event
On January 19th, Kinomad will introduce a unique side project from one of our team members: SECT Silent Club.
SECT was born from the need to showcase silent films, which have become increasingly scarce in contemporary theaters. This project aims to present these films accompanied by modern soundscapes, diverging from the conventional music typically featured in rare screenings of this kind.
The term SECT stands for Silence Enables Creative Transformation. The initiative seeks to highlight innovative films from the silent era, always paired with live music.

Etymologically, the word sect comes from Late Latin secta, meaning "manner," "mode," or "school of thought." It literally translates to "a way," "a road," or "a beaten path," and can also refer to a "religious group," particularly one considered heretical.
While the term often carries a negative connotation, its literal meaning describes a distinct group within a larger community, shaped by specific beliefs or practices.
SECT aspires to break away from the traditional, almost religious ritual of presenting silent films with just a piano, embracing a more contemporary, electric sound.
The first SECT screening will feature a series of Avant-Garde short films from the 1920s, performed by programmer, visual artist, and musician mutterichbindoom, one of the founders of Kinomad, who has been showcasing unconventional films in London since 2023.
The 1920s marked a revolutionary decade in cinema, where innovative techniques and forms emerged, shaping the rules we follow today. Visionary artists pushed the boundaries of the film medium, creating groundbreaking techniques that had never been seen before. These seminal works have since been labeled Avant-Garde, a term that remains elusive to define but can be summarized as "ideas, styles, and methods that are markedly original or modern compared to the period in which they emerge."
This is precisely what the acronym SECT aims to embody: creating something out of silence. It advocates for using absence to inspire thought, ideas, performances, and something entirely new.
kinomad exists to unearth films that disturb, provoke, and demand conversation β films that ask the kind of messy political and philosophical questions mainstream cinema avoids
we roam around London, sharing unusual films, introducing their backgrounds, and promoting independent artists and their trade
our events are always free, and aim to provide space for people to discuss and share opinions as a playground to project that in their own lives
