Hear remarkable music from the past in stunning Holy Trinity church
Stuart Willis shares his passion and knowledge for music played on plucked instruments with us during this afternoon of music. Hear pieces from the North East and beyond played on their traditional instrument- the lute.
Stuart Willis
Born in Sunderland, Stuart Willis read music at The University of Newcastle and as an undergraduate studied with Professor of lute at the Royal College of Music Jakob Lindberg. During his university studies he also performed and recorded as a session guitarist. After completing his degree, he embarked on a career as a soloist and song accompanist specialising in performance on historical plucked instruments. His repertoire ranges from solo 18th century baroque lute music and 17th century song with theorbo to solo jazz guitar music and standard songs of the early to mid 20th century.
Stuart has performed throughout the UK and Europe. Past events include The Handel House Museum ‘Hardly Handel’ series, The York Early Music Festival, The Bury St Edmunds Festival, the Grassington Festival and many university concert series throughout the UK.
An active researcher into the sources of lute and early guitar music, Stuart is the coauthor of four critically acclaimed volumes of classical guitar music published by Schott Mainz.
For many years Stuart taught both guitar and lute for Durham University's Music Department. He is now an in demand online teacher of lute, classical and jazz guitar.
