Café Riche Recital Jan 26th: 6.30-8pm
WHAT IS THE INTENSIVE?
This intensive brings together 4 world class musicians who I have connected with professionally and personally for years. Emad Nosir, Mohammed Lelo, Stuart Vandergraff and Atif Badria are generous and ready to share their talent, history and experiences with our participants. This year we also welcome the return of our very special interstate guest, Virginia Masri, from Melbourne who will be joining us to share her expertise with us.
The intensive is open to dancers of all levels, ages, background and experience. With past participants ranging from amateur to professional. Enriched by artists of the MENAHT regions such as Syria, Iraq and Egypt, focusing on the creative collaboration between dancer and musician, from conception to stage.
We come together for an exciting weekend with the intention of creating a full length original piece celebrating our unique ideas and experiences. Through the creative process of improvisation and choreography we will stage our piece and present it to a live audience at Café Riche Recital on Sunday January 26th and supported by The Sydney Arabic Music Ensemble. It really is an intensive! You also have the option of not performing but still be involved in the creation and production of Café Riche Recital. You will learn how to really take a concept and bring it to life in two short days!
This intensive is for those who relish the opportunity to experiment with Arabic live music in a supportive and nurturing environment. Get to know the instruments and the intricacies that each brings to the dance. We dissect songs/rhythms/maqams, ask questions, observe and dance. This experience allows us access to live music from start to finish. It breaks down barriers of Musician & Dancer to two artists conversing through art.
Kawkab El Sharq (The Star of the East) will be our theme for the 18th edition of the Summer Intensive. Delving deeper into the timeless music of Oum Kalthoum, offering an incredible opportunity to connect with the intricacies of the Voice of Egypt through master musicians, immersive learning, and heartfelt dance.
We will learn, work and create in a similar way to the method used by dance companies using group dynamics, exploration, games and workshopping ideas. We have previously had dancers specialising in different styles of dance such as flamenco, ATS and modern styles, including dancers with disability and of mature age.
In addition to learning from master musicians and teachers, our dance intensive focuses on developing the 'whole' dancer. We're excited to include our popular 'Short & Sweet' segment, where dancers can nominate themselves to perform a selected piece in full costume, accompanied by master musicians, and receive hand-written feedback from participants and teachers. This safe and supportive platform helps dancers conquer performance nerves and work through personal challenges. With only five coveted spots for up to 4-minute performances, this has been a vital and successful part of our Live Music Intensive.
