Why is the Schoolhouse project important for the Delta?

Clarksburg’s oldest building, the Schoolhouse opened in 1883 to all students regardless of race, ethnicity or nationality. It’s an iconic symbol of our early leaders’ dedication to education and improving the Clarksburg community. When restored, the Schoolhouse will capture, organize and share the rich history of our community. It will also become an important gathering place for meetings and community events.

1883 Clarksburg Schoolhouse goals:

  • Collect and share the stories, photographs and memorabilia of our families, businesses and non-profits.
  • Create an outdoor exhibit on the Schoolhouse grounds to demonstrate the village life of Clarksburg’s first inhabitants, the Ylamne tribe of Plains Miwok Indians who lived on Elk Slough for nearly 2000 years.
  • Serve as a home for the history and heritage of the Holland Doshi Kai, a social organization created by the Japanese members of our community following their return from internment camps in 1945.
  • Preserve and share the stories and photographs of our local Portuguese community.
  • Collaborate with Delta Elementary Charter School, Clarksburg Middle School, and Delta High School to create courses of study to be presented to our K-12 students in the Schoolhouse.
  • Become a Delta Welcome Center to introduce visitors to the Delta’s many recreational, environmental and tourist opportunities.
  • Become an information site for the new Delta National Heritage Area.
  • Work with the Clarksburg Winery Collective to promote Delta wineries to tourists.
