1838 Old Jailhouse Archaeology Dig

Come and help the Tarragindi Archaeology Dig Team find the lost 1838 Jailhouse that used to stand behind Michigan's oldest courthouse.
The dig runs from June 15 - July 10, from 10am - 12pm every weekday for these four weeks. It will be open at Picklefest too, at the same location, on Saturday, July 4, 2026, along with displays of artifacts that we have found.
Please do not dig at this site unless you are registered in this free program and, only then, during the specified times while under the direction of our archaeological director, Dr Jan Sigvartsen PhD. Thank you for protecting our history!
This is a free dig program for people aged 6-106, and is sponsored by the Tarragindi Archaeology Dig program, Berrien Community Fund, and generous local area donors who want to see Berrien County residents thrive - especially young people.
Please note, all finds remain the property of Berrien County, the owners of the Historic Courthouse Square. Unauthorized digging, prospecting, metal detecting, or treasure hunting anywhere at this square is strictly forbidden and can destroy soil layers and important historical context for our archaeologists who have permission to dig there. Again, thank you for protecting our history!
