According to the historical records folks gathered and began the process of forming the First Congregational Church of Stockton on September 16, 1865, and then formally voted on the formation the next day, September 17, 1865. Since the 17th of September is on a Wednesday we decided to have our celebration of serving God and community for 160 years on Sunday the 14th. And what a celebration it looks to be! Our conference minister the Rev. Dr. Davena Creer-Jones will be preaching at our 10 am worship service. We have also invited a number of local politicians to the service and hope to have one or two show up--and whether they are there or not, we have wonderful music, liturgy and the great preacher Rev. Dr. Davena planned for the service, Afterwards we are planing a catered fellowship with lunch and all the fixin’s. We are also planning to have commemoration swag at the event including pens, bookmarks, wristbands, bumper stickers, brochures and a commemorative booklet (filled with the church history we’ve been hearing about since June!). Proverbs 10:7 reads “Good people will be remembered as a blessing . . .” Our church history as a whole is the history of a good people! Please help us remember and celebrate all those good people as the blessings they are. And help us welcome in the next 160 years with as many good people as we can gather today. We hope to see you there!
