📍 Venue Description: The Ambassadors Theatre is one of the West End’s most intimate and historic venues, known for hosting bold, innovative plays and long-running productions. Tucked away on West Street near Covent Garden, the theatre offers a uniquely close-up experience that immerses audiences in the action on stage. Its compact design and rich heritage make it a favourite for both classic revivals and contemporary works.
Best known as the original home of The Mousetrap, the world’s longest-running play, the Ambassadors continues to champion dramatic storytelling in a beautifully preserved Edwardian setting.
### **The history of the Ambassadors Theatre**
Opened in 1913, The Ambassadors Theatre was designed by W.G.R. Sprague, who also designed its neighbour, the St Martin’s Theatre. It was one of the smaller venues of the Edwardian theatre boom, with an intimate capacity ideal for dramatic and avant-garde work.
In 1952, it became legendary as the original home of [Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap](https://www.londontheatredirect.com/play/the-mousetrap-tickets "Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap"), which ran there for over 21 years before transferring next door. Over the decades, it has staged everything from politically charged plays to successful West End transfers and Off-Broadway hits. It was briefly renamed the New Ambassadors Theatre in the 1990s before reverting to its original name.
Today, the theatre remains a key space for new writing and acclaimed productions in London’s vibrant theatre scene.
