About this Event

On Tuesday 10 October 1876 at 9 am, University College, Bristol opened its doors with its very first lecture, an exploration of mathematics delivered by William Robert Bousfield.

150 years on, Professor Oliver Johnson, Head of the School of Mathematics, will share how maths has played a foundational role in the history of the University of Bristol since that inaugural lecture.

Drawing on material from the archives, Oliver Johnson gives a non-technical taste of the fundamental contributions of Bristol mathematicians, including Nobel prize winner and Bristol graduate Paul Dirac, and former Bristol professor Hans Heilbronn.

From past, present to future, through early quantum mechanics through to computing and AI, Oliver Johnson demonstrates the last 150 years of maths, and what the next 150 might look like.

You can also visit Maths at their interactive stand to discover more about research, partnerships and student initiatives, and to meet the people behind the work. You can find them at the Exploration Zone in the Fry Building on the Clifton campus between 10 am and 2:30 pm.
