About this Event
Welcome to the opening night of the 14th annual ! Join us at the Bartos Theater for a special evening celebrating environmental resistance and justice. Opening night features the award winning documentary Necessity: Climate Justice and the Thin Green Line, directed by Jan Haaken & Sam Praus, offering visual power and drama to the struggles of people from different backgrounds and regions of the country who come together to stop industries that threaten their communities and life on the planet.
"It’s notoriously hard to make films about climate change that are pleasurable to watch. The NECESSITY filmmakers have done just that.” -- Naomi Klein, Filmmaker and Author of The Shock Doctrine and This Changes Everything (view the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/643322144)
Alongside this captivating film, we'll also host a conversation with director Jan Hasken and a local environmental activist group which will enable you to become advocates and allies in this fight. Following the film and conversation is a light reception!
- 6-7pm - Film Screening: Necessity: Climate Justice and the Thin Green Line (award-winning)
- 7-8pm - Exclusive Q&A: Meet co-director Jan Haaken in conversation with local activists for an in-depth conversation after the screening.
- 8-9pm - Reception & Mingling: Hang out with the filmmaker, climate champions, and fellow film lovers at the intimate Bartos Theatre venue.
Don’t miss this chance to connect with the Greater Boston community around environmental resistance and justice!
This screening is free of charge and open to the public. RSVP is required in order to attend. Doors will open at 5:30pm.

*This annual film festival is a collaborative effort among Women's and Gender Studies departments involved in the Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and Sexuality (as well as select institutions/universities aligned with its mission) that features films about issues relating to gender, race, sexuality, class and/or feminism.
This event would not be possible without the help of the Program in Media Arts & Sciences at the MIT Media Lab, the Program for Women's and Gender Studies at MIT, and the Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and Sexuality.
