"Marathons" have a long history in Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-Step programs. Originally, Marathons were “around-the-clock” meetings for addicts. These original Marathon meetings were typically held around holidays, which can be times of special stress and anxiety for addicts.
Marathons are no longer typically held overnight or “around-the-clock”, but continue to be offered as conferences and retreats. It is typical for special speakers to be provided along with workshop-style breakout sessions.
