Intermediate : Really get playing!

This course is perfect for you: if you have taken the Ruby’s Ukes ‘Beginner : Get Playing’ level, or if you have been studying by yourself for a while (including single note melody instrumental playing). You will continue to easily improve your Bb shape, as well as four finger chord shapes such as F7, and D7 shapes, more challenging melody instrumental playing, variations of strums, and are ready to explore new scales, music theory, and really consolidate your all round Ukulele greatness! Repertoire will draw from a catalogue of folk, pop, jazz, blues, and classical music. There’s something to learn and enjoy for everyone. Each term will have a new repertoire of music and is designed to be continued in more than once to really consolidate all the concepts. This level is also designed to prepare you to enter the Ruby’s Ukulele Orchestra!

There will also be a class materials page that include song and theory charts, and audio samples to accompany you!

The classes are a weekly 90 minute session and will leave you smiling and a whole lot smarter. The perfect way to keep inspired and have an appointment to play music each week. These classes are all 13 yrs+, and are like a real, live, class with one student per registration creating an authentic individual connection with the teacher as well as the class. For your sense of comfort and relaxation, these classes will not be recorded so you can kick back and just enjoy being in class!

This level is perfect for you if you’ve completed the ‘Beginner: Get Playing’ level. You will continue to improve your Bb chord shape, as well as chord shapes such as D7, F7,G dim. There is a continued focus fluidity of melody playing with attention to tone and sounds created.

As well as an exploration of a variety of strums, new scales, music theory, and genres of Ukulele playing. A level that has the fine line of consolidation and challenge building on the techniques established in the previous levels.

The perfect way to deepen your relationship with music!


You will learn: To play more chords associated with the F Major Scale, and perhaps the scales of D, Bb, A, or G, and how to transpose between those keys. Chord progressions move through the songs at perhaps a quicker pace. More advanced picking patterns, and a variety of strum feels, more instrumental melody playing. As well as, Intros and Outros to use in many tunes. How to create your own strums. More fret board recognition and its benefits, perhaps how to build a blues scale, a further variety of interesting chord progressions, more chord melodies, ensemble playing, and a variety of tunes from a repertoire of Jazz, Blues, Country, Classical, Folk & contemporary tunes! There is so much to learn, consolidate, enjoy, and excel at, at this level. There is something for everyone.

This course consolidates and takes to the next level the fundamentals of learning a musical instrument, and makes the reinforcement of concepts and techniques fun, fresh, and enjoyable, while walking the beautiful line between interest and the repetition needed to become a fantastic Ukulele player!

Andrew Smith is a professional musician, and live sound engineer, as well as one of our beloved Ruby's Ukes teachers. He has been playing his guitar and performing since he was a young teen performing in a folk duo with his sister as teenagers in England. He now regularly performs professionally (Ruby & Smith and Black Gardenia). His extensive knowledge of Jazz, Folk, and Finger-style guitar has translated beautifully onto his Ukulele playing and he loves sharing his tips, techniques and tricks to get his students sounding like real pros! His knowledge and supportive teaching style has students loving his Ukulele classes and workshops!

Andrew has graced the stages of the Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Mission Folk Festivals in Canada with his darlin' Ukulele in hand. As well as many other prestigious stages. He's very approachable, friendly, kind, and above all a great instructor and fun teacher!
