Join Us for Sea Level Solutions Day: Become a Citizen Scientist!
Important Dates
Sampling Day: Wednesday, October 8, 2025
10-Year Anniversary Breakfast Reception: Saturday, October 11, 2025 (for Volunteers and supporters)
Every year, seasonal King Tides – the highest of the high tides – impact South Florida communities, flooding neighborhoods and roadways due to rising sea levels. This year too, we invite YOU to be part of the solution!
Join the Sea Level Solutions Center at FIU’s Institute of Environment and the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media in College of Communication, Architecture & The Arts (CARTA ) and many other partners as we host the 10th Sea Level Solutions Day, a hands-on citizen science event, especially this year, marking a major milestone since its origin!
What’s Involved?
Citizen scientists from across South Florida will collect crucial flood data during the King Tides. Equipped with a Citizen Science Kit and a brief training on sampling, you’ll embark to use sampling tools and a smartphone app to measure water levels, test water quality, and contribute to a living scientific database. Your data will help track urban flooding patterns and support research that informs resilience strategies for our coastal cities.
To celebrate our 10th year, we’ll have five venues for training and citizen science kit distribution:
- FIU Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC)- 3000 NE 151st St, AC 2 - Room132, North Miami, FL 33181
- Legion Park- 6447 NE 7th Ave, Miami, FL 33138
- Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus- 300 NE 2nd Ave – Room 7128, Miami, FL 33132
- Vizcaya Village- 3250 S Miami Ave, Miami, FL 33129
- Deering Estate- 16701 SW 72nd Ave, Miami, FL 33157
When you proceed to reserve your free ticket, you could select your preferred site. If you are not sure where you’d like to volunteer you may choose the “OpenAssignment ” option, and we’ll assign you where we are most needed.
Then, on the day of the event, you’ll arrive at your selected venue for a brief training and to pick up your citizen science sampling kit. There, you’ll meet fellow volunteers who chose the same location, enjoy some coffee and light refreshments, and receive a short training on what to do in the field, how to collect and upload your data.
After training, you'll head out to your assigned field site to collect data during the highest peak of the King Tide. Once finished, you’ll return your sampling kit to the venue.
Prefer to sample on your own schedule? You may also coordinate with us to pick up your kit ahead of time and go directly to your sampling site on October 8th during your assigned time.
Everyone who joins us for sampling on October 8th, as well as those who have supported this citizen science effort in the past, will be invited to our 10th Anniversary celebratory breakfast reception on October 11th! Be sure to reserve your spot by selecting the free “Add-On: Breakfast Reception” ticket during registration. Space is limited, so please RSVP only if you’re sure you can attend.
