Join Us to Celebrate 10 Years of Citizen Science!
This year marks a major milestone: the 10th Anniversary of Sea Level Solutions Day (SLS Day). Over the past decade, hundreds of volunteers like you have joined us during seasonal King Tides to collect data, build one of the largest citizen science flood databases in South Florida, and strengthen our community’s resilience to sea level rise.
✨ This invitation is especially for you. Whether you’ve participated once or many times, we want to recognize and celebrate your contribution.
How You Can Take Part This Year
- Sampling + Reception (Oct 8 + Oct 11): Join us at one of five training and sampling kit distribution sites (Florida International University's Biscayne Bay Campus, Legion Park, Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus, Vizcaya Village, or Deering Estate). After training, you’ll head to your assigned site to collect flood data. Then, add on the Breakfast Reception ticket to celebrate with us on October 11 at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.
- Reception Only (Oct 11):If you aren’t able to join us for sampling this year, you are still warmly invited to the 10-Year Anniversary Breakfast Reception at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens on October 11. This is a celebration of you and the collective impact we’ve built together over the past decade. Simply add the Breakfast Reception ticket to your registration to join us for food, reflections, and community connection.
At the reception, enjoy food, reflections, art activations, awards, and community connection in honor of a decade of citizen science.
What’s Involved (Oct 8 - Sampling Day)
Citizen scientists will:
- Collect vital flood data during King Tides.
- Use sampling kits and a smartphone app to measure water levels and test water quality.
- Upload findings to a living scientific database that supports resilience strategies across Miami-Dade.
Coffee and donuts will be provided. Volunteers will also receive the official 10th Anniversary T-shirt, designed by a Miami-Dade high school student selected through a competition.
💡 Honor Local Resilience: Submit a Nomination!
As part of the 10th Anniversary, you’ll find a link in your confirmation page and email to nominate your favorite resilience project or organization. Please take a moment to answer the short questions and spotlight those making a difference. Winning nominations will be recognized at the Breakfast Reception on October 11, 2025.
What to Bring for Sampling
- Reusable water bottle
- Closed-toe shoes that can get wet
- Smartphone for data collection
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, etc.)
Why Register in Advance?
Pre-registration ensures we have enough kits and can organize teams effectively. If you miss the deadline, email us or arrive on time the day of the event, and we’ll do our best to include you. Timing is critical - sampling must occur during the peak of the King Tide, so please arrive promptly.
