10th Annual Cancer Health Disparities Symposium 2025

We invite you to join us for a vital symposium addressing cancer health disparities, a critical issue impacting underrepresented populations across New York City and beyond.

This event brings together leading national and local experts to share insights on the biological, social, and systemic factors driving cancer disparities. Topics include the latest research in cancer biology, the importance of clinical trials and screenings in minority populations, and actionable strategies to close these critical gaps. Join us in fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and working collaboratively toward equitable cancer care for all.

STATEMENT OF NEEDS

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease, and accounts for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. It is estimated that in 2023, more than 1.9 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed [3]. Furthermore, about 609,820 Americans are expected to die of Cancer in 2023, or about 1,670 people per day. Although we have made progress in reducing cancer incidence through prevention and screening and lowering cancer deaths through improved treatments, specific populations have benefited more than others from these advances. Underrepresented populations comprise a large subset of the NYC as well as the NYS population and would directly benefit from interventions aimed at closing the gaps in cancer health disparities.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

· Interpret the current research infrastructure supporting cancer health disparities research

· Distinguish the recent advances made in cancer health disparities research

· Recognize the state of cancer screening in minority populations

· List tactics to improve the participation of minority populations in cancer research studies and clinical trials
