About this Event

PRS presents a special 10th anniversary screening of documentary in honor of the release of the new coffee table book published by and , featuring a Q&A and book signing with Source Family archivist and author Isis Aquarian, co-author Charlie Kitchings and directors Jodi Wille and Maria Demopoulos!

THE SOURCE FAMILY (2012, 98 min.), dirs. Jodi Wille and Maria Demopoulos, documents the 1970s Hollywood utopian commune founded by charismatic spiritual leader Father Yod (James Edward Baker), a visionary health food restaurateur and avid spiritual seeker (who attended PRS as a student of Manly Palmer Hall in the 1960s!). The Source Family’s outlandish style, popular vegetarian restaurant, rock band, and beautiful devotees made them the darlings of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, but Father Yod’s outsider ideals caused controversy with local authorities and fractured relationships within the group. The true story—largely unexamined in the thirty-five years following Father Yod’s spectacular hang-gliding death in 1975—is revealed here by the members themselves, told through extensive home movies, photographs, documents, and interviews with several members.

About the book:

provides an unparalleled view into the world of Hollywood’s legendary utopian community, The Source Family.  Vivid full-size reproductions of 200 original scrapbook pages assembled between 1972-1977 by Source Family member and archivist Isis Aquarian are presented as they were originally laid onto the page, with hundreds of never-before-seen photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, manifestos, and flyers. FAMILY intimately maps the wild, sprawling history of The Source Family from its incandescent rise to its epic unraveling. Extended captions by the authors Isis Aquarian, Charlie Kitchings, and Jodi Wille, with an introduction by Wille. (Published by Sacred Bones and Otherworld, Nov. 18 2022). 200 pp., full color, cloth bound, and embossed 11"x12" hardcover coffee table book.
