About this Event

Join us in Toronto, Canada and be part of an extraordinary global event taking place across the world!

2023 marks the start of the next stage of growth for Lesflicks as a streaming platform and the creation of Sapphic Utopia – bringing together sapphic organisations to collaborate and support each other.

This event is the first of its kind; we aim to show that we can support and amplify sapphic films globally, not only through Lesflicks as a streaming platform but through events, marketing, and global collaboration.

We have the perfect event this Valentine’s week. Whether you are a sapphic single looking for your perfect partner, a sapphic solo looking to expand your social circle or a sapphic set seeking a date night activity, this event has something for you all.

In addition to this Toronto event, events are taking place in Toronto, Canada; Atlanta, Georgia; and in London, UK – all in the same week!

Your event hosts

Your Toronto host Sheila cannot wait to see you at Eventspace for this special screening and social on Friday 10 February. We have 80 seats ready to be filled by savvy sapphic women who desire to see themselves represented on screen. We have the perfect line-up for you this Valentine's week. These films and this event are perfect for singletons and couples alike.

In each location, we have collaborated with an LGBTQ+ or sapphic organisation to run these screening events. In addition, we have paired each event with a local short film. Each of these events is unique and local. This means we can showcase local talent and allow you to meet the creators.

The Main Feature

Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf was initially released in 2013 following a hugely successful festival run. It has had distribution in a few countries but has yet to reach a lot of the potential audience it could have, so we are delighted to be helping you to see this fantastic movie on the big screen. In 2023 the film will celebrate its 10th anniversary – help us celebrate this fantastic sapphic movie.

Before the movie, Anna Margarita Albelo will share a brief personal introduction and we will also get to watch a short sapphic film.

The Local Short

The local short screening at this event is PARK 33. Sheila will give a short introduction to her film ahead of the screening.

A Sapphic Social

Finally, these events are hosted and include a post-screening social. We know how important it is to offer opportunities for our community to come together with like-minded women to enjoy a common interest. To meet, discuss and make friends. Our host will welcome anyone arriving alone and ensure everyone is comfortable and included. We will provide traffic light badges so that there’s no awkward conversations – it is Valentine’s week, after all!

Whether you are a sapphic single looking for your perfect partner, a sapphic solo looking to expand your social circle or a sapphic set seeking a date night activity, this event has something for you all.

Who Are The Organisers?

This event is created by Sapphic Utopia, a brand that exists to amplify and connect sapphic organisations. Sapphic Utopia was created in 2023 by Naomi Bennett and Catie Lake.

What does your ticket buy you?

Your ticket gets you entry to the event to watch the short film, the feature film, to see the special introductory Q&A from Anna Margarita Albelo, the Q&A with the director of the sapphic short film and the 90-minute post-screening social to get to know the other women attending this fantastic night.

But that’s not all! You’ll also get a month’s free access to the Lesflicks streaming platform, a free traffic light badge, and a month’s free access to sapphic.social – an online community space for sapphic women that is free from catfish, ads, and Facebook J*il.

Finally, you will receive a complimentary invitation to an online live Q&A with Anna Margarita Albelo later in February. Having watched her film, you’ll have the opportunity to ask her any burning questions and find out what else she is working on.

Buying a ticket also shows a clear paying audience exists for sapphic films. This is a trial event and, if successful, will be the first of many.

Why Are We Running This Event?

More sapphic films should be getting the screenings they deserve. If we can show appetite and interest in watching sapphic stories on the big screen, we can continue to provide screenings. Moreover, we can provide them in additional locations where we identify a host and an audience. Just imagine a world where every month you can go to an event and watch a sapphic short, feature, engage with the creators and then socialise with like-minded women. That dream can become a reality! This is a test event, so we hope it will succeed.

How Did We Choose The Locations?

We used existing knowledge and relationships built through Lesflicks. Working with organisations and creatives who share our values, vision and goals for sapphic stories.

We were also exploring additional locations, but for our first event there were tight timescales that prevented some of our other desired locations. However, we’re hopeful to expand for our next event.

How Did We Choose the Films?

We were speaking with Anna about her feature initially, and had a desire to help get her film seen more. Then an opportunity came about to host a number of test events and so Who’s Afraid of a Vagina Wolf was a perfect opportunity in terms of timing. The short films came about because of the key partners. In Toronto and California, both hosts are creators; and both have new short films. It was serendipity. In London, we had a few ideas and this film has a personal connection to Lesflicks founder.

How Can You Get Screenings Where You Live?

Firstly, these events need to be successful, so help us to amplify these and to sell all the tickets.

Then also, sign up to our mailing list and tell us your location. Tell us on social and let us know where you are! Our dream is a network of screenings all over the world, and being able to show more of the amazing sapphic films being released every year – because no creator makes a film just for the small screen; and the social is important for our community too.

How Can You Help?

Share these events, recommend them, and amplify the hard work that Lesflicks, Sapphic Services and Sapphic Utopia is doing to amplify authentic sapphic stories such as Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf, Hope, Queer Science, Park 33 – plus many hundreds more!
