GOLDIE
METALHEADZ / UK
++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++
The first superstar produced by the breakbeat jungle movement, Goldie popularized drum’n’bass as a form of musical expression just as relevant for living-room contemplation as techno had become by the early ’90s. Though he hardly developed the style, and his later reliance on engineers like Rob Playford and Optical to capture his sound puts into question his true musical importance, Goldie became one of the first personalities in British dance music, his gold teeth and b-boy attitude placing him leagues away from the faceless bedroom boffins who had become the norm in intelligent dance music. For the first time, England had a beat maestro and tough-guy head who could match the scores of larger-than-life hip-hop stars America had produced, and the high profile of drum’n’bass as the first indigenously British dance music made Goldie a figure of prime importance. After spending several years working on his production skills at Reinforced Records (the home of 4hero), he founded Metalheadz Records, which released seminal dark yet intelligent singles by Source Direct, Photek, J. Majik, Optical, Lemon D, Wax Doctor, and Peshay, among others. In 1995, Goldie released Timeless, one of jungle’s first and best full-length works of art. The album put him squarely at the top of the drum’n’bass heap — at least in the minds of critics and mainstream listeners — though his follow-up, SaturnzReturn, displayed an ambitious, personal side of Goldie hardly in keeping with jungle’s producer mentality.
A native of Walsall, England, Goldie was born to a Scottish-Jamaican couple and put up for adoption. He bounced around child-care homes and several sets of foster parents during his childhood years, and became fascinated with the rise of hip-hop, breakdancing, and graffiti art. By 1986, he was involved with breakdancing crews around his home of Wolverhampton; after making several trips to London for all-day breakdancing events (and to see hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa), Goldie appeared in the English documentary on graffiti art called Bombing. He also spent time in New York and Miami (working in a market stall selling customized gold teeth), but returned to England by 1988. For a time, Goldie worked at the Try 1 shop in Walsall (also selling gold teeth), then moved to London. He began hanging out with two fellow heads from the British hip-hop scene, Nellee Hooper and 3-D (later of Massive Attack), and by 1991 he’d been introduced to the breakbeat culture that birthed jungle; at the seminal club night Rage, DJs Grooverider and Fabio pitched ancient breakbeats up to 45 rpm, blending their creations with the popular rave music of the time. Goldie was hooked on the sound of raw breakbeat techno, and he gradually switched his allegiance to jungle from the British hip-hop scene that later generated trip-hop.
Through his girlfriend DJ Kemistry (later to make her name with the mixing duo Kemistry & Storm), Goldie hooked up with Dego and Mark Mac, two of the most influential figures in the emerging drum’n’bass scene. The duo’s Reinforced Records and recordings as 4hero were fostering an increasingly artistic attitude to the music, and Goldie learned much about breakbeat production and engineering at their studios. He recorded his first single as Ajax Project, then debuted on Reinforced as Metalheadz with two 1992 singles, “Killermuffin” and “Menace.” The 1993 single “Terminator” broke him into the jungle scene — besides pioneering the crucial jungle concept of time-stretching (basically extending a sample without altering its pitch) the single evinced the growing separation between the uplifting rave scene and its emerging dark side, reliant on breakbeats and restless vibes.
The name was later taken for his influential Metalheadz Records, which released material from a legion of crucial jungle artists: Photek, Doc Scott, Dillinja, Source Direct, Peshay, J Majik, Alex Reece, Lemon D, and Optical, among others. Later singles such as “Angel” and remixes for 4hero’s Reinforced label spread Goldie’s fame, and in 1995 he signed a contract with London Records. His first major-label single was “Timeless,” and his debut album of the same name followed in August 1995. He gained additional fame in early 1996, when an American tour supporting Björk sparked a relationship between the two and led to a brief engagement period before they called off a wedding. Goldie resurfaced in 1998 with a high-profile follow-up, SaturnzReturn, an epic two-disc set including one track, “Mother,” that in itself broke the 70-minute barrier. The album tanked with critics and fans, leading to a return to the underground later that year with the Ring of Saturn EP.
The beginning of the millennium ushered in a new era for Goldie’s musical production. He produced several releases during this period, the likes of which further established the rough yet similarly emotive sound with which he and Metalheadz were best known. Examples include Say You Love Me, Malice In Wonderland and Breakin Glass, each of which were instrumental in the development of Goldie’s own personal style. So too was the output of Metalheadz’ during this period: the label amassed just shy of sixty releases throughout the decade, nurturing the likes of now-globally known drum and bass artists such as Alix Perez, Noisia and S.P.Y to name a few.
At the turn of the decade, Price received two honorary academic achievements, courtesy of Brunel University (in Social Sciences) and the University of Wolverhampton, where he became an honorary Doctor of Design. He was knighted as a Member of the British Empire (MBE) not long after, for services to music and young people. With it, he became one of few electronic musicians to ever achieve such an award.
This period proved equally fruitful music-wise, particularly in terms of Goldie’s production catalogue. He produced official remixes for two globally-known pop stars, on Ed Sheeran’s Lego House (2017) and Jessie Ware’s Midnight (2018); he released his third studio album, The Journey Man, the likes of which drew reviews from several British newspapers, including The Times and The Guardian (2017); he collaborated with UK rap icon Skepta, on Upstart (2018); and he formed Subjective, a collaborative project with fellow drum and bass producer Submotive. The duo released their first album on Sony Music in 2020, with a second album set for release later this year.
His DJ achievements were similarly successful. He began a seven-week residency at long-running London nightclub XOYO, selling out the venue multiple times in the process; he performed at global festival stages, including Glastonbury (UK), Tomorrowland (Belgium) and Primavera Sound (Spain); and he ventured into the classical music realm, hosting and performing full orchestral shows at two of London’s premiere concert halls: the Royal Albert Hall and Southbank Centre.
In most recent times, Price has also ventured into the modelling world, making his catwalk debut for high-end luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton in their SS22 menswear collection. The late Virgil Abloh personally chose him for the role, a testament to how Price is recognised and admired in several creative industries.

WINSLOW / HOSPITAL / BSA / MO
++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++
Hospital Records’ latest addition to the family hails from across the pond, flying the flag for the US drum & bass family. Producer, DJ, multi-instrumentalist, composer, music teacher and tea enthusiast Winslow, based out of St. Louis, Missouri, has quickly affirmed himself as 2021’s ‘one to watch’. With previous releases on staple imprints including Spearhead, Soulvent, Goldfat, Pilot and Hospital Records, Winslow’s meticulous attention to detail, strong penchant for forward-thinking melodies, and his unique rhythmic identity have seen him turn plenty of heads over the past year as he gained an early seal of approval from scene tastemakers including Mitekiss, Mr Porter, and London Elektricity.

In 2013, Winslow began exploring his relationship with drum & bass through his love for video games and experimenting with production a couple of years prior. Since then, he has delved into the vast plethora of the genre’s different styles which has become evident throughout his own productions. From his deep and dark steppers on his ‘Mad Flavours’ EP (released on Soulvent) earlier this year, to the liquid-funk masterpiece remix of Nu:Tone’s ‘Tides feat. Lea Lea ’ (which came out on the celebratory ‘H25PITAL’ compilation in March), it’s safe to say that Winslow has proved himself as a versatile artist with the ability to put his signature stamp on anything he makes. With frequent support from UKF, Spotify editorial playlists, and some of the top heads in drum & bass—the start of Winslow’s journey is shaping up to be fruitful.

Winslow’s healthy selection of releases have garnered support from drum & bass staples like High Contrast, Mitekiss, Nu:Tone, Workforce, and Degs. Aside from music production, Winslow also creates content for his popular Youtube channel that delves deeper into his creative technique, thought processes and influences. From playing in orchestras from the age of eight, Winslow’s lifelong arsenal of musical training has translated across into his drum & bass career, seeing him bag a spot on UKF’s ‘Future Vision’ livestream as well as a set at Hospitality Weekend In The Woods in Beckenham Place Park this September. As Hospital Records excitedly welcome Winslow to the family, don’t sleep on this talented producer...This is only the beginning!

T.R.A.C.
V RECORDINGS / NYC
++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, education in hip-hop beats and lyricism was standard, and local sounds were diverse. With other influences from jazz, R&B, reggae, rock, soul, and house, music was always at the forefront of T.R.A.C’s daily motion. Inspired by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan, and Pete Rock, T.R.A.C. was a keen student of music culture early on. Carving his own niche with flavors of blues and soul added to his undeniable lyrical skill, he became a fixture of the New York underground landscape, and has now established himself internationally as a respected vocalist, musician, and emcee.
Over the years, T.R.A.C. has developed an unmistakable symbiosis between hip hop and drum and bass. It was actually a chance meeting with fellow genre-crossing artist DJ I-CUE, which led to featuring T.R.A.C. on his first DnB tune. “Next Level $hit” appeared in 2000, and came loaded with a message of genre unity: a concept that has fueled his musical movements ever since. Seeing that artists like the Jungle Brothers, Method Man, and KRS-One were crossing over into the higher tempos—while vocalists like Dynamite, DRS, and Inja combine their DnB strengths with jazzy hip hop vibes—T.R.A.C. set out to carving his own path. Along this journey he’s been connecting these genre dots in a totally unique way, forming a sound of his own which has become a staple in the US and worldwide dance music scene.
T.R.A.C.’s first solo 2011 hip hop album “The Network” album was produced by Reinforced Records and 4hero pioneer Marc Mac, where the junglist influences were close at hand. With multiple collaborations with UK hip-hop institution Lewis Parker under his belt, it was clear that T.R.A.C.'s connection with the homeland of drum and bass would run deep. After more of his tunes found their way onto labels such as SGN:LTD, Jazzsticks, and Intrigue, T.R.A.C.’s focus sharpened. His 2017 “Life in Motion” album on V Recordings has brought some of the most detailed insights yet into this prolific artist’s musical ethos. Featuring productions/collabs from heavy hitters like Lenzman, Bladerunner, Calibre, Atlantic Connection, Serum, David Boomah, Dynamite, Conrad and others, this is a nonstop soul-infused ride through T.R.A.C.'s unmatched blends of hip hop, soul, and DnB.
With a diverse portfolio of releases, and “Life in Motion” becoming an instant classic—T.R.A.C.’s reach continues to grow with tremendous momentum. He has been found playing all over the US and UK; in Austria, the Czech Republic, Romania, Canada, and of course at Sun and Bass in Italy.
2020 productivity was strong, and “Life in Remixes” was born. Released early 2021 on V Recordings with remixes by L-Side, Random Movement, Carlito & Addiction, Edward Oberon & Paul T, Benny L and Saxxon to name a few, the vibes from this album are at a high level. Mid year, “Back On My Griz” was released with Beat Merchants, and continues to crush dance floors with it’s positive vocals and a deep bluesy bassline. Fall of 2021 has seen yet another incredible collection of tunes hitting the radio waves with T.R.A.C. and Maverick Soul jointly releasing “Sonically Speaking,” another full length LP this time on Ample Aptitude Recordings. This album has an impeccable flow of electronic and hip hop beats, combined with soulful drum and bass rollers, featuring Sofi Mari, RIYA, Christina Tamayo and David Boomah.
Throughout T.R.A.C.’s professional career, this New York native’s beats touch down into a broad array of genres, with jungle and drum and bass as a major part of his repertoire. You can find T.R.A.C.’s music played in podcasts, radio, on-stream, and in live DJ sets in regular rotation. He is also equally capable of replicating those top notch studio vibes on stage. Dropping precision-tooled lyricism alongside off-the-dome freestyling and well-honed hosting skills, he continues to bring his hype to cities everywhere in a manner which is both addicting and refreshing.
As his name suggests, he's here “To Rule And Conquer”, and as his upward trajectory to global recognition continues, that eponymous prophecy is coming true as this amazing vocalist continues to expand his reach.

DEFINITION POSITIVE
JUICE / Los Angeles & Portland / OR
++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++
After broad exposure to Jazz, Salsa, and R&B growing up, Donahue aka Definition Positive learned to appreciate the deeper side of some of these genres, and how it affects and drives emotion. His passion for music and mixing exploded in the Los Angeles rave scene during the mid 90’s, nurturing this new love for electronic music. Once experiencing Drum and Bass, he shifted gears permanently; realizing that this style was the missing part of his 'musical soul.’
Former resident DJ at Nova Express Cafe, Futurebound Radio, LA, and LiquidBass_net, Def Pos became an LA staple representing these unique sounds. Since relocating to Salem, guest appearances have included Bassdrive, Signal Flow Radio LA, DnBTV and countless live performances all around Oregon with some heavy-hitters such as the Atlantic Connection, Bachelors of Science, Artificial Intelligence, Ben Soundscape, ASIDES, Calculon, MC Question Mark, DJ Marky, Drumsound and Bassline Smith, and more.
Resident artist at JUICE! Drum and Bass nights in Portland, Def Pos delivers soulful grooves and funky baselines with a level of quality and sound not to be missed.
