We're running a one-day introduction to Restorative practice which is a great chance to get a feel for this approach and find out how it might work in your school and learn some skills for everyday practice. The course is for those seeking to know more about how restorative practices look, sound and work in a school setting. Gain the vital information you need to help you start to build your understanding of all things restorative and how you can use it in your school.

Restorative Practice is a way of being, thinking, interacting, teaching and learning – with relationships at the centre. Many schools are using restorative approaches to foster an inclusive, child-centred and relational learning environment. Restorative practice works on building relationships across the school and complements a trauma informed approach. Children develop emotional and social skills and learn to take ownership of conflicts and solutions to conflict. With Restorative Practice, we create safe, supportive spaces in our schools where we can engage in and learn from conflict and difficult conversations. We build trusting, supportive communities where we find effective ways to respectfully hold ourselves and one another accountable. With mutual respect, our communication, empathy and trust is built.

The course is delivered by a practitioner, who is accredited by the Restorative Justice Council.

WHAT IS A RESTORATIVE APPROACH?

A restorative approach prioritises relationships, building and rebuilding them in a continual cycle. When conflict or harm happens, those relationships form the basis for repair. The restorative process then brings those harmed by conflict, and those responsible for the harm, into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward. We offer schools an alternative way of thinking about addressing relationships, learning and behaviour and offer a consistent framework for responding to these issues.

COURSE DETAILS

This introductory restorative practice training course is for people working in education at all levels. It will provide participants with the background knowledge and skills that are required to use informal restorative practices in their day to day work. The course will introduce participants to the philosophy and language of restorative practices. It also engages participants in identifying how to apply this innovative and relational way of dealing with conflict into their daily work. The training day is experiential with a mix of theory, skills practice and small group work people have come to expect from Peacemakers. The training will cover a variety of restorative practices.

You will be introduced to:

• underlying theory, philosophy and values of restorative practice;

• some of the language and questions and ways of thinking that form part of a restorative way of working;

• some of the key skills needed to carry out safe and effective restorative practice in your setting.

This course will help you to:

• sort out minor problems in the classroom and on the playground;

• help children develop empathy and build relationships with one another;

• develop your conflict resolution skills;

• support others who are developing restorative practices for the school.

Hot and cold refreshments will be provided throughout the day, with a sandwich lunch (vegetarian option on request). Please let us know of any dietary requirements you have.

The training is being held at The Priory Rooms Meeting and Conference Centre in central Birmingham, B4 6AF. There is no parking available on site. Snow Hill and New Street train stations are within 10 minutes walk. There are tram and bus stops very close by. Please be aware of the tram road works currently taking place in the town centre. The nearest car park is at Snow Hill Station (5 mins walk). The Clean Air Zone is in operation within the A4540 Middleway.
