About this Event

Universal Chan International 501(c)(3) non-profit organization will be holding a 1-Day 15-Mile Hiking Chan.

Location: Mt. Tamalpais State Park (Mill Valley, CA)

Starting point: West Blithedale. About 200 feet after crossing Lee St. is the beginning of the trail—the road crosses the creek.

Date: Saturday, June 1, 2024

Start: Hiking at 5:15am

End: Evening; arriving back at the starting point before sunset

Length: About 15 miles

Includes time for: eating, sitting meditation, and exercises

Difficulty level: hard

Leader: Chan Monk Daxing

Our Hiking and Backpacking activities are for hiking lovers who are also interested in learning how to employ the Buddha's wisdom in order to live a satisfactory life.

These are not simply regular hikings—they are Hiking Chans (Zen).

We do not choose trails where climbing is needed.

Basic Rules:

Participants cannot use their phones or other electronic devices; they have to maintain Golden Silence at all times, except during the designated Q&A times and other situations presented by the leader.

Furthermore, everyone must follow the leader's instructions and maintain a harmonious relationship with the rest of the group. More details are on the Application Form.

In each activity, Chan Monk Daxing will provide the necessary instructions and answer your questions during appropriate times.

Itinerary Difficulty Levels:

We classify our itineraries' difficulty levels in the following way:

1=Moderate: No very long-distance trails; may present some moderate challenges.

2=Challenging: Can be moderately long-distance trails with some challenging asperity.

3=Hard: The trails will certainly have difficulties either because of long distances, considerable steepness, or both, yet will not be prohibitive for people in decent physical shape.

4=Super Hard: These are trails that can be hiked ONLY by people in VERY GOOD SHAPE, either because of the strenuous long distances, very high altitude gains, both, and/or other challenges.

According to the specific season, location, and itinerary, we will send you extra information and instructions about the itinerary, required equipment, etc.

Participants must truthfully fill out our by answering the questions and signing it in order to be considered for acceptance into this Hiking Chan.

We are a donation-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization; the very low fees are necessary to help us continue our Dharma Activities so that we will be able to benefit more people.
