Meaning “Light of Day,” Plique-a-Jour is a traditional technique of applying transparent enamel without a metal backing. Light passes through the enamel, illuminating its color.
Students will learn the piercing method for Plique-a-Jour using 16 or 18 gauge sheet metal. Important design considerations will be discussed, such as the size and shape of the ‘cells’ and incorporating Plique-a-jour into jewelry pieces. Sarah will demonstrate transparent enamels for Plique-a-jour, layering enamels for various color effects, kiln firing and finishing methods. Copper will be provided for students to make a small pendant or earrings. You may bring your own sterling or fine silver, or purchase some from the instructor.
Sarah Loch-Test grew up in Ohio and studied at Kent State and East Carolina universities, where she embraced the art of enameling.
